Representatives of the Grand Theatre and Hefei’s Cultural Scene Visit the International German School Hefei

When we seek to express ourselves as human beings, we rely on the words our language provides. Learning within a bilingual program opens the door to entirely new concepts and ways of thinking. Comparing languages allows us to better understand our own culture and inner world. The Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once put it this way:

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”

The space that lies between the lines—beyond what words can express—is filled by art and music. “Where words leave off, music begins,” wrote the German author E.T.A. Hoffmann, who, incidentally, penned the literary inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker.

Language, art, and music are essential elements of holistic education and are therefore firmly embedded in the IGS curriculum. As an international school, IGS sees itself not only as a place of learning but also as a cultural hub. Building connections with Hefei’s vibrant arts and cultural scene is an important part of this mission.

This past Thursday, we were honoured to welcome representatives from Hefei’s arts and cultural institutions—among them the Grand Theatre—on our campus. During inspiring conversations, ideas were shared for joint projects, concerts, and a potential long-term collaboration between both institutions.
