Explore, Create, Imagine the Future: Our Future Explorers at Binhu National Forest Park

At the IGS Summer Camp, everything comes back to the future. The future of our school, of the environment and of our students. That is exactly why the IGS Future Explorers chose a special place in Hefei where the future can be shaped and where the whole school community benefits: Binhu National Forest Park.

In this wetland habitat, our Future Explorers gained a real sense of how ecosystems work and how people act within them. Two questions guided the day: How can humans influence nature in a positive way? And how do we secure a healthy coexistence of people and nature? The children explored both, step by step.

Across three rich learning phases, they became the researchers. First, they observed plants and pollinators, recorded exactly what they saw, and learned how closely the living things of a wetland depend on one another.

Then came the creative part. The children pounded different wetland plants onto canvas bags, transferring colours and shapes straight from nature. Almost by accident, this technique sparked a strong idea for their own upcycling projects.

Finally, the Future Explorers investigated how a natural water filter works. They layered quartz sand, activated carbon and other sediments, then watched contaminated water grow cleaner as it passed through. A simple model that shows how wetlands do exactly this job out in nature.

The most important lesson of the day, though, was a different one: acting responsibly towards the environment. The trip inspired our Future Explorers to develop their own ideas and solutions for real ecological problems. Later in the Summer Camp, they will turn those ideas into working prototypes.

That is how a day outdoors becomes a real step forward. Our children observed, researched, created and imagined the future. That is what IGS Future Explorers is all about.
