Healthy Eating Project Inspires Young Learners

The project was initiated by class teacher Mrs. Bilowitzki and led by kindergarten teacher Ms. Dorea Weihrauch, who also supports Class 1 students daily in German as a foreign language. Through thoughtfully designed activities, children experienced healthy nutrition in practical ways.

Closely linked to current classroom learning, the project deepened students’ understanding of key science topics. While Grades 3 and 4 connected their knowledge of the digestive system to real-life food choices, Grade 1 students reinforced their learning about teeth and nutrition.

The central focus was on building food literacy. Using the nutrition pyramid as a guide, students reflected on their own eating habits—starting with their breakfast. They learned to estimate portion sizes using visual cues such as their hands and fingers.

The interactive experiments were particularly impactful: using an egg, vinegar, and dental floss, children investigated how sugar and acidity affect dental health. These experiences made abstract concepts visible and fostered critical thinking.

The project also emphasized life skills. Children prepared three simple meals together—making their own scrambled eggs was a highlight. Each day concluded with a shared breakfast, creating space to practice social and cultural competencies.

Overall, the project sparked curiosity, encouraged reflection, and promoted healthy habits. By combining scientific understanding with practical application, children gained valuable tools to make informed choices in their daily lives—an essential step toward lifelong well-being.

This is learning at IGS: We don’t just talk about healthy nutrition – we experience it together. Learning becomes practical and connected to everyday life, supporting our students’ holistic development and engaging all their senses.
