IGS International Day: Let’s Tour the World!

On 15 May 2025, the International German School Hefei did not simply celebrate International Day — it lived it. What unfolded was not a festival of food stalls and flags. It was a full day of cultural immersion — one where students, teachers, parents, and guests learned from one another, played together, competed together, and went home knowing a little more about the world and the people they share it with.

The Parade of Nations

The morning began with movement, colour, and music. Students and parents dressed to represent their country of origin — or simply a country close to their hearts — and marched together through the school. There were costumes planned for weeks and some thrown together with love the night before. There were children walking beside parents, and parents walking beside teachers — all of them, for a moment, equals in the procession.

More Than Food — A Genuine Cultural Immersion

A total of 11 cultures were represented: the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Peru, Germany, South Africa, and China — with two guest booths, Mexico and Turkey, represented by parent volunteers. What made this different was not what was on the tables, but what happened around them.

Each booth represented the home country of one of the school’s own teachers — making every corner of the celebration an act of genuine personal sharing. Students from all backgrounds were assigned to support booths that were not their own, stepping outside their own identity to learn about another culture and discover what they had in common along the way. Activities, games, and trivia at every booth invited guests to participate, ask questions, and leave knowing something they did not before.

The Afternoon: House Championships

The spirit of International Day carried straight into the afternoon, where House Cheetahs, House W.L.Fs, and House Kitsunes competed — not just for points, but for pride. People from different countries and backgrounds, competing and cheering side by side.

Jump Rope

The afternoon opened with jump rope in individual and group divisions — demanding rhythm, coordination, and courage. Just as the parade brought nations together in step, jump rope brought houses together in sync.

Fun fact: Jump rope has ancient roots across Egypt, China, and Indigenous communities on multiple continents — it crosses cultures the same way our booths did: through shared movement.

Volleyball

Rallies that drew cheers from the sidelines and reminded everyone why team sport is universally loved. Like the booths in the morning, volleyball only works when everyone plays their part.

Fun fact: Now one of the most widely played sports globally, volleyball has a particularly devoted following across Southeast Asia — including the Philippines, one of today’s celebrated cultures.

Handball

Fast, physical, and full of energy — handball brought a distinctly European flavour to the afternoon, fitting for a school rooted in German tradition. Our students delivered quick thinking and quick passing in equal measure.

Fun fact: One of Germany’s most beloved sports, handball’s team-first nature made it a natural fit for a day that celebrated how much more we achieve when we work together.

Tug of War

No championship is complete without tug of war — and this one came with a special twist: our teachers joined in. Students and teachers on the same rope was perhaps the most fitting image of the day: a school community, in the most literal sense, all on the same side.

Fun fact: An official Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, tug of war has ancient roots in China, Egypt, and India — cultures all represented at today’s booths. You cannot win it alone.

Everyone a Winner

The day closed with an awarding ceremony that honoured not just those on the podium, but every student, teacher, and parent who showed up and played their part. The truest prizes, though, were harder to hold — the things learned at a booth staffed by someone from a different background, the handshake at the end of a hard-fought match, the conversation started by a trivia question nobody expected to answer.

Those went home with everyone. In that sense, everyone went home a winner.

Thank you to every student, teacher, parent, and guest who made this day what it was.

See you next year.
